Fall Garden Maintenance | Kansas City Garden Supplies
If considering transplanting shrubs or trees, now is a good time. The soil temperature is still warm, so digging in your landscape is not impossible and most plants are dormant or heading there. Make sure when digging you get as much root mass as possible. Replant and water in and mulch around the plant. I would check before pruning back, as a lot of the spring blooming shrubs and trees bloom on that years growth, so there will be no spring blooms if you prune too much!
Caring for Rose Bushes | Kansas City Garden Supplies
This is a good time to put your roses to bed for the winter. Clean up the foliage around the plant and prune back after the 1st hard freeze. Mulch in the plants with approximately 3″-4″ of quality mulch.
Planting Fall Bulbs | Kansas City Landscape Supplies
Late October in Kansas City should be cold enough to plant your tulips, daffodils, crocus etc. As a rule of thumb, bulbs should be planted twice as deep as the bulb is big. Cover with mulch and water in. Don’t plant bulbs if temperature is too warm or if it is extremely wet.
Kansas Fall Gardening | Kansas City Gardening Supply
Fall is a perfect time for replacing or planting new shrubs or perennials. The plants have plenty of time to get rooted in before winter. When planting, it is always good to improve existing soil in your landscape if you have a high quantity of clay in your soil.
Seedbed Preparation | Kansas City Landscaping Supplies
Get your seedbeds ready now-scratch up the surface and remove any thatch or debris. Top 2″ of soil should be loose. Sow seed with spreader or by hand. Keep seed moist. For optimum results use sphagnum peat moss to cover seed. Spread approximately ¼” thick. Use new lawn starter over seed on same day and water in. Fertilizing seed will help seed germinate faster and grow in thicker. Never let your seed dry out. Water at least twice a day approximately 5 -10 minutes a day.
August Mulching Garden | Kansas City Landscaping Supplies
Now is the time to add some new color to your landscape beds. Hardy mums come in a huge selection of colors and are low maintenance. They will bloom through November. You can also plant pansies at this time of year. Mulch in well and they will return next year.
Summer Garden Plants | Kansas City Gardening Supplies
It’s July in Kansas City and it is HOT!! Make sure to replenish mulch in your beds to maintain moisture for your summer garden plants. Don’t pile mulch against your plants, but taper away with the smallest layer up against the plant. Sometimes “too dry” symptoms are really because your plant is “too wet”. If necessary stick your finger into the soil upto your first joint to test the soil moisture.
Summer Lawn Watering | Kansas City Landscaping Supply
Hot weather in Kansas City can mean stress for plants. It’s much better for your plants to water deeply every two days than it is to water lightly every day. The exception is container plants or hanging baskets-they will likely still need daily watering. Look for drooping leaves and light colored soil as a sign of needing water.
Annual Flower Garden | Kansas City Nursery
Keep all your flowers and landscaping gorgeous with regular deadheading. Pinching off all the spent blooms will keep them going strong. Also, at this time stop pinching back your hardy mums. Leave them be so they will now form buds for fall blossoms.
Garden Pond Maintenance | Kansas City Landscape Supplies
Stay on top of water garden pond maintenance, warmer temperatures cause water evaporation so add a small amount of an algaecide each week. Adding large quantities may be harmful to fish and some plants and will encourage algae growth. Be sure to follow directions and good circulation of pond water is a must!
